IMEXCO Partners with UNESCO to Support the Chứt Community in Preserving and Promoting Traditional Cultural Heritage

A sewing skills training program for the Chứt community in Quảng Trị Province has recently been launched as part of a UNESCO-led project on heritage preservation and sustainable livelihood development. The initiative not only equips local community members with practical sewing skills but also empowers them to preserve and promote cultural values closely connected to their ethnic identity.

The program is implemented through the collaboration of various professional organizations and development partners. As one of the contributing partners to the project, IMEXCO Vietnam Joint Stock Company is proud to support initiatives that foster cultural preservation, strengthen community capacity, and advance sustainable development.

Supporting the Chứt Community in Developing a Distinctive Traditional Costume

Unlike many other ethnic minority groups in Vietnam whose traditional attire has been well established and passed down through generations, some Chứt communities in Quảng Trị have not had a standardized traditional costume commonly worn during community activities.

Responding to the community’s practical needs, cultural experts worked closely with local residents to research and develop a community costume inspired by the Chứt people’s cultural memories, daily life, and traditional identity. This marks an important step toward reinforcing cultural identity and strengthening community cohesion through meaningful cultural symbols.

Enhancing Practical Skills for Local Women and Community Members

Alongside the development of the community costume, the program also focuses on practical skills training, enabling local residents to actively participate in producing and using the garments in their daily lives.

During the first week of training, held in Bản Ón and Bản Cáo villages, participants learned how to operate sewing machines, cut fabric, practice fundamental sewing techniques, and gradually complete the first components of the community costume.

Most participants were local women, who play a vital role in preserving, passing down, and sustaining cultural traditions within their communities. By acquiring practical sewing skills, they are better equipped to create, adapt, and maintain the costumes according to real community needs.

A Meaningful Achievement Built Through Community Participation

One of the program’s defining strengths is its community-centered approach. Rather than being solely the outcome of academic research or professional consultation, the community costume was developed through active participation, discussion, and decision-making by local residents themselves.

This collaborative process enhances the practicality of the final design while increasing the likelihood that the costume will continue to be worn during community gatherings, festivals, and cultural events for years to come.

The approach also reflects contemporary heritage conservation principles, recognizing local communities as the primary custodians of cultural heritage and placing them at the heart of preservation and cultural revitalization efforts.

Advancing Heritage Preservation Through Sustainable Development

The initiative is implemented by UNESCO in collaboration with Craft Link, the Vietnam Institute of Ethnology and Religious Studies, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quảng Trị Province, and local government authorities.

The program forms part of the project “Enhancing Local Community Benefits through Partnerships for Heritage Conservation and Sustainable Practices.” By strengthening local capacity, the project seeks to create lasting value in cultural preservation, sustainable livelihoods, and community-led local development.

As a supporting partner, IMEXCO Vietnam Joint Stock Company reaffirms its commitment to contributing to initiatives that generate positive social impact. Supporting cultural preservation alongside sustainable development not only helps safeguard valuable traditional heritage but also creates opportunities for local communities to strengthen their own capacities and build a more sustainable future.
